The Easter Rising began on April 24, 1916 when a group of nationalists sought to establish an Irish Republic independent from British rule. The majority of the insurrection occurred in Dublin, where revolutionary forces took control of several locations in the city, including the post office, and officially declared independence for Ireland. This declaration did not receive the amount of public support that the rebels had hoped for, and the United Kingdom declared martial law in Ireland. Many skirmishes between the insurrectionists and the British military followed over the next five days, and the Easter Rising ended in defeat for the Irish rebels on April 29, 1916. Total deaths from the event totaled around 500, many of which were civilian casualties. Remaining rebels, along with many civilians, were taken prisoner by the British Army, and some were sent to internment camps. Most of the leaders of the Easter Rising were court-martialed and executed.
