Astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee die in fire aboard Apollo 1 test launch. This causes the temporary shutdown of the Apollo Program to investigate what went wrong. It was later concluded that a spark was created from loose wires in the highly pressurized, mainly with pure oxygen, caused the fire to spread in about 30 seconds. The hatch to the cockpit was only accessable from the inside and was held be ratchets. The astronauts were quickly suffocated and burned to death inside.
