Austria-Hungary announced the annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which were formerly within the sovereignty of the Ottoman Empire. This declaration sparked protest from all the Great Powers and Austria-Hungary's Balkan neighbours, Serbia and Montenegro.
This increased the tensions between Serbia and Austria-Hungary.
