The Canadians were moved to contribute with the French and British line heading towards the city of Ypres. The Germans had the higher ground and were able to fire into the trenches. The Germans introduced a new weapon to use, mustard gas. The Germans were aiming to flank the 50,000 Canadian and British troops. The Canadians planned to drive the Germans out of Kitchener’s wood. This is where the Canadians finally emerged victorious after their hard fought battle. The battle gave the Canadians a reputation as a formidable fighting force. Though, the Canadians had over 6,000 injured or dead troops from the battle.
