Robert Borden added conscription to Canada on May 18, 1917. Conscription got announced in Ottawa. There was a debate happening between French-Canadians, as well as many farmers, unionized workers, non-British immigrants, and other Canadians, opposed the idea, and English-speaking Canadians, led by Prime Minister Borden, as well as British immigrants, the families of soldiers, and older Canadians, who supported the idea.
