Pauline Esther Phillips, better known as Abigail Van Buren and the woman behind “Dear Abby”, is born in Sioux City to Russian Jewish immigrants. She and her twin sister Esther Pauline Phillips were the youngest of four siblings. Both attended high school and college in Souix City before going on to both become popular newspaper columnists.
