On July 25th, the war began has yet another Balkan war. Austria, having demanded the return of the previous dynasty as well as other concessions from Serbia, would intervene and pacify Serbia. Things had changed drastically by August 1st; Russia pledged to support the new nationalist Serbian government and in so doing promised war. Germany in turn would pledge to support Austria.

The war luckily did not expand much beyond that, as events below will indicate. In 1915, Bulgaria would join on the side of the Germans as well Romania would join the Russians but ultimately the war would remain a Central European one.

Germany was forced to use old plans to deal with a single Russian enemy, specifically the old Aufmarsch II Ost. The plans did what they were intended and did indeed defeat Russia but not in the tidy one year slot the Germans had hoped.
