Upon news of the failure of the plot to kill the heir to the Austrian throne and hence realizing that the crucial war to liberate Serbia indeed may not come, Serbian nationalists attempted to seize the reigns of government. Many soldiers turned against the current liberal Prime Minister Nicholas Pasic and instead turn to Colonel Dimitrijević . These nationalist circles also soon turned to Alexander Karađorđević as their rightful monarch.

Liberals rallied around Pasic and in turn he proclaimed a Provisional Government from Belgrade, sadly that government was not long for this world, as nationalist forces immediately began assaulting the city. Pasic then fled south towards Greece to escape there. Pasic did set up quite a strong network of support though, most notably Milenko Vesnić toured France in support of the liberal cause and to seek French aid to the civilian government.

The war would only end with Austrian intervention, which brought back to power George Obrenović and Obrenović dynasty, which had been overthrown in the May Coup, ironically also led by Dimitrijević.
