1 янв 450 г. - The earliest Old English inscriptions

Описание:

There were four main dialects across England, most were written in West Saxon, whilst the others were Mercian, Northumbrian and Kentish.
The Anglo-Saxons adopted the style of script practiced by Irish missionaries, a runic alphabet. These characters were the first written version known as Anglo-Saxon runes. The alphabet was an extended version of the Elder Futhark, with between 26 and 33 known letters. These runes were utilised from around the 5th century AD until around the 10th century. The characters began to be replaced for the Latin alphabet from around the 7th century, and after the 9th century the runic alphabet were used mainly in manuscripts, and the interest of antiquarians.
