The Berlin Wall separated West Germany from Communist East Germany. It was a physical and ideological barrier between the two regions. It was claimed to have been erected to prevent Western Aggression into the East. The Western Allies claimed it existed to prevent East Germans from moving into West Germany and gaining access to NATO protection.
