After the second world war, many European countries had difficulty rebuilding their economies and security. The United States saw this as a great time to provide aid to the European nations and prevent the spread of communism across the continent. The aid program did not only help the economy of the European countries but promoted the ideas of shared interest and cooperation between the U.S. and Europe. The various incidents that occurred on Europe allowed for the United States to stay connected with Europe. The events caused U.S. officials to grow increasingly wary of the possibility that the countries of Western Europe might deal with their security concerns by negotiating with the Soviets.
