A series of reforms by the Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev, including the perestroika and glasnost, resulted in the collapse of the Soviet Union. Many countries experienced liberation movements and eventually mass popular uprisings overthrew the Communist governments. On December 30th, 1991, the Soviet Union was officially dissolved.
