The myth of Aphrodite and Anchises is one of the love affairs of the Goddess, told in the first Homeric hymn to Aphrodite (2). Aphrodite, with power over Gods and men alike, constrains even Zeus to love mortal maids, causing much trouble with his wife Hera. Therefore, Zeus decides to punish Aphrodite and in his turn, makes her fall in love with a mortal man: Anchises, second cousin of King Priam of Troy. The hymn describes Aphrodite's seduction of Anchises, to whom she hides her divinity until the morning after. She then announces that she will bear him a son, Aeneas, and prophesies Aeneas' important role for the future.
Aeneas is not only a great hero in Homer's Iliad (3), he is the forebear of the Romans as told in the Aeneid, the monument of Roman power by the Latin poet Virgil (70-19 BC) (4).
