On stocktaking day, 1 November 1681, the scissorsmiths’ storehouse in Sheffield contained <i>sheaths, namely prickers, razor cases and crooked sheaths</i> (IH). It seems likely therefore that prickers were the sheaths that contained knives and which were attached to men’s belts around the waist.
