To ‘min’ was to remind, and the ‘minning’ was a reminder, a peal of bells rung to commemorate a departed soul. In 1524 William Greve of Penistone made a request in his will that William Benson, a priest, <i> for the terme of his lif ... shall every yere cause a mynnyng to be rongyn </i>(SS79/188).
