Hitler had been successful in defeating all other opposition by banning trade unions, making strikes illegal, making all political parties except the Nazis illegal and abolishing the local governments. Now Germany was a one-party state.

However, Rohm and his 3-million-strong SA were now a threat to Hitler. Rohm criticised Hitler's policies and wanted a more socialist Nazi Party. The leaders of the SS and the German army wanted to reduce the power of the SA too. They warned Hitler that Rohm was planning to seize power.

Therefore, Hitler called Rohm and 100 other SA leaders to a meeting, where they were arrested and killed. Papen was also put under house arrest.
