During the Cuban Missile Crisis leaders of the U.S. and the USSR battled in a tense political and military standoff in October 1962 over the installation of nuclear-armed Soviet missiles on Cuba, the United States military installed spy plane missions over Cuba to see the extent of the nuclear arms there. This sent a huge scare throughout the world, but mainly the US because residents believed that mutually assured destruction was in the near future. President JFK on October 22nd, 1962 addressed the media and let them know that there would be blockade of Cuba to cut off all support from the USSR.
