On August 13th, 1961, the communist government in East Berlin began to build an “antifascist bulwark” that separated the East and West Berlin parts of Germany. The official purpose of the wall was to keep out the Western fascists because they were undermining the socialist state. The wall in reality was to keep out the mass defections from happening East to West. On November 9th, 1989, when the head of the communist government in East Berlin decided that there was no reason to have the wall any longer and residents were free to move between one another freely.
