The launch of Sputnik on October 4th, 1957 began the “Space Age” and showed the rivalry between US and the USSR because immediately the US created a new space program and began revamping their science system. This was the first spacecraft launched into space and also immediately started the Space Race. Sputnik stands for “satellite” and was the USSR’s way of showing their dominance over the US in one aspect of life.
