This happened during the Cold War under President Eisenhower when an American U2 spy plane was shot down over Soviet Territory. At first the US lied about the plane and claimed that it wasn’t a spy plane, but they had to come clean when photos of Soviet Military bases were discovered. This heightened the Cold War and continued the deterioration of the relationship between the US and the Soviet Union.
