After Germany had already invaded Poland for two days, Chamberlain announced that the British deadline for the withdrawal of German troops from Poland had expired. The first casualty after the announcement was the the British ocean liner Athenia. It was sunk by a German U-30 submarine. Britain's response was nothing more than a few anti-Nazi propaganda efforts. On September 4, Britain would begin bombing German ships. The French were slow to come in because the Germans had mined the 90 mile window leading to Germany, also known as Belgium and Luxembourg. This event is important because it started the 'Phony War.'
