Reagan announces the Strategic Defense Initiative (STI) or Star Wars program. This would create a laser shield around the US that would destroy Nuclear Missiles before they reached inner orbit thus making it impossible for the USSR to hit the US. Andropov accused the US of developing a plan to start a tactical nuclear war with the USSR. For the USSR to be able to compete they would need to increase their military spending which would cause the struggling econmy to collapse.
