Died in Asia Minor while leading an army in the Third Crusade. He drowned near Silifke Castle in the Saleph river. Accounts of the event are many and conflicting. It seems that Frederick was thrown from his horse and the shock of the cold water caused him to have a heart attack. According to the chronicler Ibn al-Athir he was weighed down by his armour leading him to drown in water that was barely hip-deep. It is told that some of Frederick's men put him in a barrel of vinegar to preserve his body for the return trip and his burial. [Wikipedia]
