The Congo became independent due to the election of Lumumba, and renamed itself "Republic of Congo." Thousands of Europeans began to flee the country. The Prices are told to leave due to racial problems but they do not because of Nathan's extreme stuborness. "At last it is Independence Day, for Mathuselah and the Congo" (Kingsolver 186).
