Nathan blows off the advice of Mama Tataba while planting his fruits and vegetables from America. His form of planting fails and eventually, he must use Mama Tataba's way. Nathan touches poisonwood while making his garden and acquires an awful rash. "Ow! Great God almighty, Orleanna. How did this curse come to me, when it's God's own will to cultivate the soil" (Kingsolver 41).
