Nathan was drafted in the later years of the war, he received an injury, and had to leave his company behind. He felt guilty for their deaths, so in order to be forgiven he dedicated his life to God, and the Bible. "He was drafted. At Fort Still, his captain made note of Nathan's faith and vouched that he'd serve as a hospital cleric or chaplain, decently removed from enemy lines" (Kingsolver 191).
