On this day, 19 militants associated with Al - Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against US targets. Two were flown into the Twin Towers, the third into the Pentagon, and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. These attacks triggered U.S initiatives to combat terrorism and defined George W. Bush's presidency.
