For about 44 years the United States and the Soviet Union were locked in a state of tension during a time we call the Cold War. The scariest point in the war came on October 22, 1962 when Kennedy made the public announcement explaining that nuclear weapons had been discovered in Cuba. The public broke out into panic knowing that Cuba was allies with the Soviet Union.

When Kennedy met with government officials on October 16, 1962, some were considering a full-scale invasion of Cuba. However, Kennedy knew that this could potentially spark a nuclear war between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Instead he took a safer approach by establishing a blockade to prevent more weapons from getting to Cuba. However, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev considered the blockade unfair because it restricted Cuba's international trading industry.

After Khrushchev's response, panic in the U.S. had escalated even further. The U.S. military declared itself at def con 2, meaning that we were 1 step away from nuclear war. However, the crisis ended when John F. Kennedy's brother Robert Kennedy came to an agreement with Soviet ambassador, Anatoly Dobrynin. They proposed the idea that the Soviets would take their nuclear missiles out of Cuba if America agreed to take their nuclear weapons out of Italy and Turkey. Khrushchev agreed to this and the scary 13-day Cuban Missile Crisis finally ended.
