9 окт 1989 г. - Communists Lose Power in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania

Описание:

After holding democratic elections in each of the Soviet satellite states, the communists were elected out of power. This was especially significant for Poland, for the country had not had its own free elections in over half a century. The country elected Lech Walesa, a Polish anticommunist activist. Since 1976, Walesa had been leading union workers in anticommunists protests and strikes. This union activity had spread throughout Poland and became known as Solidarity. In 1981, Solidarity was banned and Walesa was thrown into jail. The further economic collapse in Poland in 1988 paved the way for new protests and strikes, leading the communist led government to meet with Solidarity and agree on the free election that eventually put Walesa in power.
