The story of the Berlin Wall dates all the way back to the end of World War ll in 1945. After Germany was defeated, it was split into 4 sections, each controlled by the four main Allied countries: France, Great Britain, the U.S., and the Soviet Union. At this point in time, the Soviet Union was under communist rule. To avoid living in communist territory, German citizens fled to West Germany, a democratic area controlled by the other three capitalist countries. To prevent East German citizens from crossing into the West, Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin put the East German government to work building a wall in Berlin that stretched 91 miles long. After just one night, August 13, 1961, the Berlin Wall was complete. The wall remained intact for over 28 years until it was finally taken down in 1989 under President Ronald Reagan.Добавлено на ленту времени:
