hardliners in the Soviet Union attempted to stage a coup to maintain communist rule, but millions of russians led by Boris Yeltsin rallied in support of Gorbatrov the coup fell apart. The event made the 15 republics the Soviet Union influenced feel as if their central government was falling apart, and moved towards independence.
