Martin Luther King, a Baptist minister and founder of the SCLC, was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. King had led the civil rights movement since the mid-1950s, by giving speeches and using nonviolent tactics to fight segregation and make advancements in the civil rights for African Americans. His assassination sparked anger among many black Americans.
