Began being built in 1000 through 1100 B.C.E, the Anasazi built over 600 homes into the cliff in the four corners area of the U.S.A. Mostly residential but had some storage and religious places. Cliff palace was the largest house with 150 rooms and it was made of a new material, mud mortar. Families lived in architectural units called kivas, which are circular rooms. They had a firepit, a vent, a deflector, which controlled fire, and a sipapu, a religious hole where spirits were believed to have gathered. No real benefits to it being built except shelter. Abandoned around 1300 C.E less than a hundred years later. The dwellings were made out of sandstone.
