Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested in Birmingham, Alabama on April 16th, 1963 because of the peaceful protest that him and 50 others had participated in the Birmingham movement. The arrest was based on the fact that peaceful gatherings or protests weren’t allowed any longer without a granted permit, but Martin Luther King Jr. saw it as an opportunity to protest the brutal treatment of African Americans in Alabama. He drew enough attention to have President John F. Kennedy intervene to get him out of jail and to allow him to have fair treatment in jail. Martin Luther King Jr. decided to stay in jail longer to draw even more attention to the way African Americans were being treated.
