(May 1846- February 1848) This war was the visible expression of the popular sentiment of Manifest Destiny. 13,000 Americans died and in true American fashion neither textbook says how many Mexicans died in this war. (Presumably it doesn't matter) The United States gained the largest single tract of land in U.S. history, larger than Louisiana Territory and or Alaska. Mexican teen-agers died defending their military academy on the outskirts of Mexico City in a place called Chapultepec, today their memory is kept alive by the Avenue of child heroes. The war provided ample training experience for U.S. military men who would lead battles in the American Civil War. The U.S. War with Mexico created an earned bad reputation (Legacy of scorn) for the U.S. among Latin American countries.
