IN 1908 Edison was trying to benefit from "his invention" by making other people people pay for every meter of film that was used. This meant that smaller companies really suffered and didn't make that much money. To make matters worse if the companies didn't pay Edison he would send his "goons" to the companies and smash all of their film equipment. So the companies decided to try and escape Edison's grasp. At the time the main place for film in America was New York. So the directors traveled away from New York to Southern California. The weather out there was a lot nicer and there was also a lot more space to build studios to film in. So they stayed there. Which resulted in the birth of Hollywood which today is the main place for film, whilst New York's film scene slowly started to die.
