The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is an international military alliance between several North American and European nations. It was created based on the idea of collective defense, which simply means that the other nations in the alliance will come to the military defense of one should it be attacked. In response to its creation, the soviets created the Warsaw Pact, an Eastern European mirror of NATO.
