Cherokee Indians wanted to take action against the laws passed in Georgia (basically stripped Native Americans of their basic human rights)
Supreme Court ruled that the Indians were a dependent nation inside the US, not an independent nation or state, and therefore did not have a say in legislation
Indians were not citizens of the US and therefore weren't protected under the Constitution
