Nathaniel Bacon, from a wealthy English family, was sent to Virginia by his father to learn how to make it on his own. Angered at Governor Berkeley for being denied a trading license, he began opposing the Governor at every opportunity. Bacon was one of the late corners who were trying to carve out plantations in the hinterlands of VA. When conflict with Indians surfaced, Bacon demanded the Governor organize a militia. The Governor refused claiming it would require unwanted taxation. Bacon then raised his own militia of disgruntled former indentured servants and began killing Native Americans indiscriminately. Before it was all over the power hungry Bacon had attacked Jamestown and burned it to the ground. This revolt was the most serious challenge to governmental authority in the colonial period. The only thing that diffused the rebellion was Bacon's sudden death from dysentery. VA planters rapidly shifted from indentured servants to African slaves.
