The middle passage being the horrific Atlantic crossing for the Africans who were chained and crammed aboard the death ships. (20% died in transit). Slavery itself, the "peculiar institution", became an American institution in seventeenth century colonial time period. In this system, the slave owner reaps all the material benefits of the work of his slave. The shift to from indentured servants to African slaves was reinforced and strengthened by laws (Slave codes) that racialized slavery. The impact of racialized slavery, which continued for 200 plus years in America, is perhaps beyond comprehension
