"Sbarcammo a Gibilterra all'alba. La nave impiegò ore per entrare in porto. C'erano moltissimi buchi nel magazzino, ognuno dei quali lasciava entrare enormi quantità d'acqua. Senza il catrame, saremmo affondati in tre giorni. Aprimmo le casse per i doganieri. Erano vuote."
("We landed in Gibraltar at dawn. The ship took hours to steer into port. There were many, many holes in the storage room, each one allowing enormous amounts of water to enter. Without the tar, we would've sunk in three days. We opened the crates for customs officers. The crates were empty.")
