En 583, après la rébellion manquée de son époux, le prince wisigoth Herménégilde, contre son père Léovigild, la princesse franque Ingondis s’enfuit avec son jeune fils vers le territoire byzantin du sud de l’Espagne. Ingondis mourut à Carthage en route vers Constantinople, mais son jeune fils Athanagild fut conduit dans la cité impériale où il devint l’objet de négociations diplomatiques entre les cours byzantine et franque.
