The Epic of Gilgamesh is one of the oldest written texts. It is the oldest text with a known author, Sinleqeunnini, although it was originally a collection of stories which were passed down orally as early as 2000BCE and began as a Sumerian text. The text was written in Akkadian on tablets many of which were found in the ancient city of Ur in Sumer. The Epic recounts tales of Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, in addition to many other stories which outline the relationship between God and humans or give mythic reasoning to the power structures in ancient Mesopotamia. The Epic of Gilgamesh influenced many future religious texts. Many elements of creation stories or the Biblical flood story are derived from the Epic of Gilgamesh.
