The mayor of San Sebastian and member of the board of directors of Zinemaldia, Eneko Goia, has expressed his "respect" for the decision of the International Film Festival to award the Donostia Prize to the actor and producer Johnny Depp, so the contest has been accused of "lack of ethics in the face of violence against women".

In recent days, the Association of Women Filmmakers of Euskal Herria had been "sad and angry", and considered that the decision is "inopportune" and that the festival "is in time to turn back." For its part, CIMA, the association of Spanish women filmmakers, wondered "what kind of message the festival wants to send with this election, taking into account, in addition, that it has signed the Parity Charter."

In statements to RNE, Goia recalled that the festival has starred in "more than one controversy." "Perhaps the world of cinema is prone to, sometimes, some decisions are questioned. I have been very respectful of Zinemaldia himself, who is the one who valued the person's cinematographic merits in his day, not other issues, to give him this award," he said.

As he has indicated, "although it has generated some controversy," he understands that that decision must be respected. "In that sense, I respect the decision of the Zinemaldia, as I have respected it on other occasions that also, by film selections or non-selection, have been the subject of controversy," he concluded.
