Lee wanted to gain Britain's recognition and help so he attacked Maryland. McClellan knew of Lee's plans and drove the Confederates out but failed to pursue them, causing Lincoln to drop McClellan for the final time. First major Union victory and prevented the South from getting foreign aid.
