23 апр 1972 г. - Dori Ann Haines & Cheryl Ann Monticello DOUBLE HOMICIDE & MULTIPLE RAPES

Описание:

About midday/afternoon on Monday, April 8, 1972, Dori Haines, 15, and Cheryl Monticello, 16, were hitchhiking together in western LA County. They were picked up in a truck by Fred Medina, 19, and Danny Townsend, 18, as well as their friends E (18, male), L (17, female), and V (15, female) at a gas station called Zody's on the corner of Roscoe and Topanga Canyon Boulevards. The seven then, "drove in the truck over Topanga Canyon to a beach somewhere north of Malibu," where they spent about an hour before "return[ing] to the San Fernando Valley via Malibu Canyon and then [driving] up Woolsey Canyon Road or, as it is locally known, ‘Rocketdyne Road,’ in Woolsey Canyon in the hills west of the Chatsworth Reservoir. They parked the truck at a remote and isolated site off a dirt road about a quarter of a mile from Rocketdyne Road." A bit later, around the time it was starting to get dark, E, L, & V left the area in the truck and went back home.

Nine days later, on April 17, 1972, three young men were shooting tin cans in the area where the truck had been parked when they found what appeared to be human remains covered with brush; the body was Dori's. Four days later, two women who were hiking in the same area discovered the body of Cheryl, covered with brush and debris like Dori's.

Both girls died from multiple stab wounds to the heart with a knife or knives. Dori was stabbed approximately 50 times, most of which were made by a single-edged hunting knife, though several wounds were made with a double-edged knife. Cheryl was stabbed approximately 35 times with a single-edged knife. Furthermore, "Both victims had severe basal skull fractures and their throats had been cut. Dori had, in addition suffered a nonfatal blow with a blunt instrument to the forehead. In addition to his testimony concerning the wounds, Dr. Carpenter testified that both the victims had consumed, shortly before their death, a quantity of barbiturates—specifically, pentobarbital sodium or, as it is referred to on the street, ‘Yellows.’"

In early May, E heard that the investigating officer wanted to talk to him; E "gave a statement to the officer implicating both defendants and [L] and [V]. On May 9, 1972, both defendants were arrested, as were [L] and [V]." E, L, and V were ultimately granted immunity in exchange for producing tape-recorded statements.

It was revealed that L and V both took a swing at Dori after she refused to perform fellatio on Fred Medina, with one of the girls missing and the other striking her. Dori complied with their demands, and then was forced to have intercourse with Medina; L and V wandered off and returned to the truck, which Danny Townsend and E were exiting as E implied that he had just had sex with Cheryl. E then walked over to where Medina had left Dori after finishing, and proceeded to then have sex with Dori. E claimed the sex was "consensual," but also observed that Dori was intoxicated.

Townsend then brought Cheryl to a nearby cave and proceeded to to have intercourse with her. V found her afterward and asked her "why she had done it" with both E and Townsend; when Cheryl didn't answer, V started a fight with her, and both wrestled about and ultimately fell out of the cave. "Cheryl rolled to the bottom of the path and just lay there."

Meanwhile, E "completed his act of intercourse" and returned to the truck, leaving Dori as she was, which is how L found her. Dori was crying and tried to apologize for "taking away" L's boyfriend (Townsend), who had shown her attention earlier at the beach. This angered L, who then kicked Dori in the shoulder and then hit her on the forehead with a rock that was about 4in in diameter. L then returned to meet with V in taunting Cheryl, who was ultimately struck in the head by a large rock.

L and V then returned to the truck and told the boys that Dori and Cheryl would need to be killed so they wouldn't talk. E was not armed, while Medina and Townsend were, so only the two of them proceeded to go to each of the girls and stab them to death with their knives, first Dori, then Cheryl. While L, V, and E didn't directly witness the murders, they saw Medina and Townsend go to Dori, then after some time walk toward where Cheryl lay with blood on their knives and clothing. All five of them participated in covering the bodies before returning to the truck.

While L, V, and E received immunity for their statements, Townsend and Medina were ultimately sentenced to life in prison. According to one source I found, Townsend was reportedly granted parole in 2021, and Medina may have already been paroled before then.
