US President Bush orders the deployment of an additional 20,000 US troops to Iraq, called the "surge," to bring stability in and around Baghdad. General David H. Petraeus assumes control of US forces and begins to recruit former Sunni insurgents in what becomes known as the "Awakening."With 900 US casualties, the year of the "surge" becomes the deadliest of the conflict for American troops.
