Considered the last Battle of the American Civil War, the Battle of Palmito Ranch took place on the banks of the Rio Grande in southern Texas. Confederate General Edmund Kirby-Smith rejected a proposal to surrender his Confederate forces, but in early June he officially surrendered the forces.
