The attack on Fort Sumter marked the beginning of the Civil War, and occurred in a federal fort in Charleston Harbor, SC. At the time of the attack, South Carolina had already seceded from the Union, however the federal fort in Charleston Harbor under Major Robert Anderson still held up, however supplies were low, and tensions were high. The Confederate Army would eventually fire at the fort, and although the Union refused to fire, they would eventually surrender 34 hours later. In response to the attack, Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to put down the rebellion, and the Upper South secession would soon follow, building up to full scale war. The attack on Fort Sumter led to the Civil War because the Upper South Secession would soon follow, finalizing the borders that would lead to the Civil War. Furthermore, tensions further increased because this act of violence meant that secession had turned into something that was more than political; it was a declaration of war. Furthermore, the attack gave Abraham Lincoln and the Union the moral high ground, as the Confederacy had attacked first.
