The Mexican-American War : Political Importance. It is important to America today because it proved that America was determined to keep Texas. After being made a state only 2 years earlier, Texas was brand-new and still figuring things out. Because of the war, Texas is still a part of the US today. It was the first war that was predominantly fought on foreign soil. California and all Mexican territory north of the Rio Grande was sold to the US for 15 million dollars.
